On 21 April 2026, Thulamela Chambers, together with the Association of Comms and Technology and Through Line Advisors, hosted an industry discussion under the theme “A New Frontier in ICT Regulation.” The event brought together leaders from the legal, telecommunications, competition, policy, and regulatory sectors to examine the rapid changes shaping South Africa’s ICT landscape.
The discussion included representatives from key institutions and industry players, including ICASA, the Competition Commission, Maziv, MTN, Telkom, Webber Wentzel, TechCentral, ACT, and Thulamela Chambers. The sessions considered developments flowing from the Vodacom-Maziv matter, market consolidation in the fibre sector, regulatory accountability after MTN v ICASA, and the future of platform regulation in South Africa. The programme also dealt with administrative justice, public interest considerations in merger regulation, and the role of regulators in a fast-moving, technology-driven market.
Artificial intelligence was also a central theme. The AI discussion, led by Vincent Maleka SC and facilitated by Professor Sizwe Snail ka Mtuze, considered judicial oversight of AI-inspired official decisions, algorithmic decision-making, platform regulation, and the need to balance innovation with accountability. The discussion reflected Thulamela Chambers’ growing ICT and telecommunications law offering.
