Akhona Mehlo holds B.Com law and LLB degrees from the University of Pretoria, and an LLM in International Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa jointly from the University of Pretoria and University of Ghana.
She was admitted to the bar in 2024. Before joining the bar, Akhona served her articles at Gildenhuys Malatj Attorneys and was admitted as an attorney in 2013. After obtaining an LLM in Human Rights she transitioned to the public interest sector and worked as a legal researcher at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and later clerked at the Constitutional Court for Justice Jafta. Most of her career before the bar was as a corporate accountability public interest lawyer at the oldest, leading human rights organisations in South Africa such as the Centre for Applied Legal Studies and Legal Resources Centre, and later as a legal Counsel at Greenpeace International, litigation on issues around land and extractivism, climate change and environmental regulation, public procurement, social security, immigration, protest and policing, basic service delivery, gender and various constitutional challenges to policy, legislation, and executive and administrative action.
